The brief was to create a handmade design concept for a book of choice that focused on the exploration and application of design principles, colour theory, lateral thinking and typography. I chose to redesign The Wizard of Oz book cover. The story’s underlying motifs influenced the colours I chose for my composition. During the building process, I realised my composition wasn’t working, so I went back to thumbnailing in my workbook and went in a completely different direction. The result is a reinterpretation of the eye of a swirling tornado, a major motif in the story. I was able to repurpose the card I had purchased into discs which I overlapped in a swirling motion to create movement in the tornado.
